The goals of Hungry for Friends
We
aim to bring together people who might never have met under regular
circumstances. The unique "Dinner Roulette" format, usually
comprising only six individuals at a table, provides the perfect setting for
genuine and personal interactions. Even the most reserved participants are
seamlessly integrated into table conversations in this intimate setting.
However,
our goal isn't to bring together just any people but the "right"
ones. Hence, we capture the preferences and characteristics of all participants
to design the dinner courses in a way that enriching connections can
potentially be made. Each dinner is intended not just as a culinary event, but
primarily as a human experience.
Why Berlin?
, Berlin may not be the easiest city for such a concept given its vast distances, but its rich diversity certainly makes it one of the most exciting. That’s why Maximilian saw both a challenge and an opportunity here. With his in-depth knowledge from his studies in transportation engineering—which he uses to solve complex planning problems—and the valuable experience gained from previous Dinner Roulette events, he is convinced that Hungry for Friends is the ideal platform to bring Berlin together in a very special and heartfelt way.
Who is behind Hungry for Friends?

Maximilian is the heart and mind behind Hungry for Friends. Trained as a transportation engineer, Maximilian discovered his passion not only for transporting people but also for connecting them on a deeply personal level. He first encountered the Dinner Roulette concept in 2016, and it was love at first bite. Two years later, he organized his first Dinner Roulette. To date, he has coordinated a dozen events either privately or in collaboration with associations and organizations in Berlin and other cities.
Did Hungry for Friends invent the 'Dinner Roulette' idea?
Not exactly. In the US, the concept has been known as 'progressive dinner' or 'safari supper', dating back to the late 19th century when East Coast residents tried different dinner party formats, including changing seats and venues between courses.
Today's format has been known in Germany at least since the late 1990s. 'Dinner Hopping', 'Running Dinner', and 'Laufgelage' are common names. In Berlin, however, such events were modest in scale compared to the city's size. 'Hungry for Friends' seeks to change this. To avoid local terms like "Laufgelage" and steer clear of trademark issues with 'Running Dinner' and 'Dinner Hopping' we needed a different name. We chose 'Dinner Roulette', emphasizing the surprises involved in each course and the random composition of people at each venue.
